This article is about the quantum field theoretic process of particle–antiparticle annihilation. For other uses, see Annihilation (disambiguation).

Annihilation is defined as "total destruction" or "complete obliteration" of an object;[1] having its root in the Latin nihil (nothing). A literal translation is "to make into nothing".
In physics, the word is used to denote the process that occurs when a subatomic particle collides with its respective antiparticle.[2] Since energy and momentum must be conserved,
the particles are not actually made into nothing, but rather into new particles. Antiparticles have exactly opposite additive quantum numbers from particles, so the sums of all quantum numbers of the original
pair are zero. Hence, any set of particles may be produced whose total quantum numbers are also zero as long as conservation of energy and conservation of momentum are obeyed. During a low-energy annihilation,
photon production is favored, since these particles have no mass. However, high-energy particle colliders produce annihilations where a wide variety of exotic heavy particles are created.

Total Annihilation (abbreviated TA) is a real-time strategy video game created by Cavedog Entertainment, a sub-division of Humongous Entertainment,
and released on September 30, 1997 by GT Interactive for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.[2] It was the first RTS game to feature 3D units and terrain. Two expansion packs were released, The Core Contingency
on April 30, 1998[3] and Battle Tactics on June 30, 1998.[4] After the closure of the Cavedog Entertainment Studios in 1999, the intellectual property fell to Infogrames (now Atari). In March 2010, Total Annihilation
(with Core Contingency and Battle Tactics expansions included) was re-released as digital download from Stardock.[5]
Total Annihilation is no longer supported, due to the closure of Cavedog. With Gas Powered Games, lead designer Chris Taylor went on to create Supreme Commander, popularly considered the "spiritual successor" of T
otal Annihilation.[6] An open source remake of Total Annihilation named Spring, with a completely 3D graphics engine and lacking any fixed camera angle, has been independently produced.[7] Also, the Total Annihilation 3D (TA3D) project was begun in the summer of 2006. [8]
